The ultrasound revealed that the mass in Emma’s neck is a not a cyst, this is good news. It is important to address immediately, but it is not critically urgent nor is it likely to require surgery. PRAISE GOD. It is a congenital condition called muscular torticollis resulting in fibromatosis colli which is a rare benign “tumor” on the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle. It is often caused positioning prior to birth or birth trauma and results in this self-limiting pseudo-tumor. Treatment consists of 6-12 months of consistent physical therapy at which point it should go away. Surgical correction is not considered unless it persists for longer than 12 months with proper PT. This explains Emma’s muscular torticollis which is a congenital condition resulting from this “tumor”. This is something that both neurology and occupation therapy were monitoring for changes. They were not concerned at this time and had given us instructions to help Emma turn her head more often in the opposite direction from the side that she naturally favored. This is good news because both we, and the neurologist, know that it is not neurologically related.
